Wayne lives in Whitley Bay with wife and two children (aged 9 and 5). Having been an avid sportsman at school, Wayne studied Sports Science at Sunderland University graduating in 2000 with a BSc in Sports Science. Once he had finished his studies he started part-time lecturing at Gateshead College and Northumberland College, combined with working as a Sports Development Officer for Newcastle College. Wayne then become a full time lecturer at Newcastle College in 2001. His teaching specialisms included: Anatomy & Physiology, Biomechanics, Technology in Sport, Sports Injuries, Sports Coaching, Exercise for Special Populations, Exercise and Fitness, Fitness Testing, Health Related Fitness in Children and Children in Sport. Wayne was also in charge of setting up, coaching and organising the rugby squads as part of Newcastle College's Sports Performance Centre, as well as the North East Colleges team, the Northern Region team and the national England Colleges representative rugby teams. Wayne left his full time teaching post at Newcastle College in January 2006 to set up his own business - Urban Active, which has been operating successfully all over the north east for over three years. Wayne also works as a part time Motor Skills Coordinator at Woodlawn School, as well as lecturing part time at Newcastle College as a specialist tutor teaching students how to deliver safe and effective health related exercise sessions for children.
